eBay Evo

-

When I joined eBay as its first Design Technologist, I came in to build a Design Technology team with a fairly modest goal: change the company’s relationship with design. That meant reimagining the product experience, closing the gap between design and engineering, raising the bar on front-end craft, and strengthening eBay’s design story inside and out. A major step toward that goal was Evo, a new design system and brand platform built to rethink how eBay looks, feels, and gets made.

A new design system is only useful if it ships. To turn Evo from an idea into a funded initiative, we rapidly built its primitives, components, and patterns, then prototyped eBay’s core experiences directly in production stacks across web and native. Those prototypes powered research, internal roadshows, and ultimately the case for what a more modern eBay could be.

The work helped secure executive support for Core 4, a funded initiative to modernize Home, View Item, Search, and the Global Header. My team partnered directly with each domain to carry design intent into production, building components, tooling, and front-end solutions along the way. We also took on rebuilding the Global Header ourselves, the most used web component that hadn't seen a meaningful update in over a decade.

As Evo matured, my team began owning flagship experiences for initiatives including Authenticity Guarantee, Influencer Storefronts, and True View 3d Sneakers. Owning these products end to end gave us room to push the system further and establish a north star for what an Evo experience could feel like in production.

The work also fed back into the system. Patterns developed for these experiences became reusable composite components adopted across eBay, giving product teams a stronger starting point without requiring everyone to constantly reinvent eBay.

The work culminated in the Evo Playbook, the home for eBay’s design system and brand framework. More than documentation, we designed and built it as a product: part reference, part teaching tool, and part expression of Evo itself.

The Playbook helped make the system tangible across eBay and became a showcase for the broader design transformation. It was featured by Figma and Fast Company and earned Zeroheight’s award for Best Design System Documentation, which was a nice outcome for something technically called documentation.
